A Note About SHOES:
In this style of dance it is important to have a little traction against the floor, as well as a little slide. Tennis shoes, flip flops and sandals are great. (I pride myself on having started the flip flop trend... I found the best ones at Ann Taylor Loft which have perfect sole texture, low profile, comfy foot bed, available in platforms or flat. Get them snug - a size small.) Whatever the shoe, Low/small profile is helpful. Hard plastic, or suede soles are great. Rubber is too sticky, (most) ballroom shoes are too slippery. Character shoes are WAY too slippery. High heals are too challenging at the beginning. You might want them later. Sandals are good if snug and comfortable, with hard soles, and can double as street shoes. Good brands are: Noat, Clarks, Born, maybe Aerosol & along that line. Some people wear tennis shoes and put tape on the bottoms to make them a little slippier. I don't like to put more goop on my shoes, so opt for sandals with hard, not sticky bottoms. Remember, this is a "street" form of dance. You need to feel the ground and get your impulse / connection from beneath.
